As part of the HI EU – Croatian Initiative for the European Union in Schools project, the University of Dubrovnik has developed the EU Pedagogy Topic Alignment Matrix, a key tool designed to help teachers systematically and effectively integrate EU-related topics into school curricula. Created under Work Package 2 (D2.1), the document connects school subjects with key European Union policies, making it easier for students to understand the EU’s role in everyday life.

Supporting Teachers in Teaching About the EU

Incorporating EU topics into lessons is often a challenge, as teachers lack structured resources and concrete examples on how to adapt them to different subjects. The Matrix enables topics such as European integration, the Single Market, EU values, sustainability, and regional policies to be seamlessly linked to school subjects in ways that are engaging and age-appropriate.

“Our goal is to make EU topics a natural part of education, rather than something mentioned occasionally. This Matrix provides teachers with clear guidelines on how to integrate EU themes into subjects they already teach, enhancing students’ understanding and interest in European matters,” says Nebojša Stojčić, project coordinator.

How Does the Matrix Help Teachers?

The Matrix covers a wide range of subjects, including history, geography, civic education, economics, science, and sports. It provides:

• clear connections between EU policies and school subjects,
• educational objectives tailored to different student age groups,
• recommended teaching methods such as case studies, project-based learning, and simulations,
• practical guidelines to help teachers effectively incorporate EU topics into their lessons.

Special Focus on Rural and Island Schools

The HI EU project places special emphasis on schools in rural and island areas, where access to educational materials on the EU is often limited. By using the Matrix, teachers in these schools will receive additional support in making EU topics more accessible to students, ensuring equal learning opportunities across different regions.

Next Steps

The Matrix will serve as the foundation for teacher training sessions within the HI EU project, equipping educators with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively teach EU topics. This tool is expected to contribute significantly to modernizing civic education and helping students develop a critical understanding of the European Union’s role.

With this step, the HI EU project is further advancing EU education in Croatian schools, making it more accessible, structured, and aligned with the needs of both students and teachers.
